What
tests do I need to take?
Before
you are allowed to drive unsupervised you are required to pass two
tests, the Theory Test and the Driving Test.
The theory
test consists
of 50 multiple choice questions. You need to select the correct
answer, or answers, by touching the computer screen. You will be
allowed 57 minutes to complete the test. To pass you need to
correctly answer 43 out of the 50 questions.
The
hazard perception test
was incorporated into the theory test in November 2002. This part of
the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on the
computer screen of approximately one minute each. There will be 15
hazards to find, at least one on each clip. However, one clip will
have 2 hazards. You will be assessed on how soon you spot the
dangers. The sooner you respond the higher the score.
The
video clips will be shown on the screen after you have completed the
multiple choice questions. The pass mark is currently 44 out of a
possible 75 marks and the cost of the test is £30.
You
can start driving lessons before you take your theory test,
combining your theory study with the early part of your driving
course. When you feel ready, your theory test appointment can be
arranged. You can't book a driving test until you have passed the
theory test.
The driving
test is
about 40 minutes long. During this time you will be required to
demonstrate your driving skills in a variety of different road
conditions. You will also be required to undertake several set manoeuvres.
Questions
relating to vehicle maintenance were added to the driving test in
September 2003. At the start of the driving test, candidates will be
asked two questions, one "show me" and one "tell
me". One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in
one driving fault being recorded.
The
cost of the test is £56.50 weekdays
and £67 on
Saturdays. |
